Sheff Wed Deals with Major Issues, States Independent Regulator

'Our role is integral to football's future' - independent football regulator the new chairman

The team's persistent issues constitute a "serious issue" and the new football authority is looking to gain the ability to investigate clubs in similar circumstances, the recently named head the regulator has announced.

In a wide-ranging interview, the regulator, who was named to the position this week, showed understanding towards the club's followers.

Kogan met with four supporter groups connected to the Championship side recently.

The football club have been facing challenges both on and off the pitch in 2025, with the club missing wage payments on multiple instances, including in last month.

"Evidently Wednesday represents a major concern for the league and a significant problem for football," Kogan told.

"The club represents one of the great brands for English football and recently we have met Sheffield Wednesday supporters' groups.

"We're now looking to get powers... which will permit us to bring Wednesday and comparable cases submitted for our review if they require examination and dealt with."

Financial Struggles and Ownership Situation

The team's struggling chairman the current owner indicated in the summer he would be willing to sell up at Hillsborough, but he has not been able to secure a deal with potential new owners.

Missed wage deadlines on time in earlier this year resulted in restrictions being imposed by the league officials in summer, preventing the club from carrying out any player acquisitions for the next three transfer windows, although the ban was rescinded in the end of the transfer window.

Official's Viewpoint

The regulator explained: "Our role exists to serve the supporters of Wednesday, teams facing challenges where fans are dedicated to a local institution that has represented their community in multiple situations.

"I completely understand the team's plight, as I do for all the clubs that over recent decades have faced collapse, or nearly ceased operations, for reasons that have nothing to do with the supporters."

Inquired if the regulator could force an proprietor to divest a club if they are considered unfit, the chairman responded: "Should the inquiry concern 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the answer is once we gather the evidence and comprehend the circumstances, we will."

But Kogan stressed that requiring chairmen to relinquish clubs would be treated as a "last resort" and the authority would rather to cooperate with proprietors.

"Our least desirable course of action is commence engagement with an particular organization, an particular chairman, without being able to work with that proprietor to address the challenges confronting the team and the chairman's encountering," Kogan said.

"In actuality, when you examine the past of football, over the past few decades there have been some owners, a small minority, but particular people who have shown negligence in the manner they have operated their clubs and ultimately don't wish to take responsibility for the long-term prospects."

'If we get it wrong, extraordinary progress vanishes'

The chairman convened with officials from numerous teams to lay out the remit of the oversight body this week and insisted it was a "progressive gathering" with a "substantial involvement" from the National League to the Premier League.

"The role holds considerable importance, because if errors are made, if the sport makes errors, the extraordinary progress that's been made might evaporate incredibly quickly," Kogan said.

"And that's what nobody wants in the context of the English game is a major achievement - we must maintain momentum.

"Substantial financial resources coming into football and has been channeled for the recent generations, because there are no assurances it will continue to come into football, which is one of the reasons why I think we have to maintain a focused outlook on challenges and obviously, of the immediate future."

Premier League Concerns

Elite division representatives objected to the establishment of an oversight body because of apprehensions regarding adverse consequences on the top-flight's competitiveness, but the chairman responded: "I completely endorse the success and growth as an financial organization of the top division.

"I of all people understand the concern of undermining the Premier League as a premium product of this country. But simultaneously, if you talk to the Premier League after the recent gathering, they would have had a substantial amount of confidence -and, indeed, they have been informing us confidentially they have a considerable comfort."

Partisan Associations

Kogan is still facing a "comprehensive investigation" by the official appointments authority after he acknowledged providing funds to the opposition group in 2020.

The chairman provided financial support for Culture Secretary the minister's leadership bid, along with that of the government leader.

"I have fully disclosed my past party membership [with Labour], and that ideological connection terminated the day the official body endorsed my nomination," the chairman stated.

"I am presently disconnected from any sort of politics."
