New research indicates that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users using these treatments need to be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle support.
